Is There A Difference Between BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport®?

Dysport® and BOTOX® Cosmetic are both types of botulinum toxin injections. While used to treat muscle spasms in certain health conditions, these two injections are primarily known for the treatment and prevention of wrinkles. The differences lie in the potency of trace proteins, which can make one more effective than the other. Dr. Kia will discuss with you the treatment options that work best for your needs. Both treatments are an injection that uses various forms of botulinum toxin to paralyze muscle activity temporarily. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a chemical prescription that is derived from botulinum toxin type A and type B. It was approved by the FDA in 2002. The injections temporarily paralyze your muscle activity by releasing neurotoxins which inhibit your nerves from communicating with your muscle. They can reduce the appearance of wrinkles by relaxing your facial muscles. Use of these injections can reduce the frown lines between your eyebrows as well as your forehead furrows. 

What To Expect With BOTOX® Cosmetic

Dr. Kia is a skilled doctor who can help you determine if the use of BOTOX® Cosmetic best suits your needs and health. He will start by guiding you through the procedure and explain how it is done. You will be informed of how much you are getting and in which areas. Depending on your health condition, he may suggest numbing the treatment area to decrease the amount of pain associated with the procedure. During your consultation, Dr. Kia will ask you a series of questions associated with your health and any medicine you take. He will advise you to stop using blood thinners several days before the procedure to reduce the risk of bruising and bleeding. During the procedure, Dr. Kia will mark the areas on your face to be treated. He will then use a fine microneedle to inject the BOTOX® Cosmetic directly into your facial muscle. He will also use ice and pressure on the treated area to avoid swelling. You will be advised to repeat treatment based on the depth of the wrinkles and the possible frequency of the appearance of wrinkles. You will also be informed of the possible side effects associated with injections such as bruising, minor swelling, redness and numbing in the treated area. You will be warned against treatment if you are pregnant or have chronic urinary tract infection. Treatments can be hazardous if it is administered incorrectly, Dr. Kia will guide you through both your pre and post procedure care.
